Geocaching

Explore the local countryside & search for hidden treasures!

"Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment." - www.geocaching.com

Geocaching is a great way to explore the area, and you'll discover places many locals don't even know about! Quinta das Abelhas is a great base for experienced geocachers or those who've never tried it before (be careful, it's addictive!). There are many caches nearby and you can take in quite a few on a day trip.

Geocaching on Horseback

One of the caches, Palheiros dos Fiais (a group of 75 ancient stone buildings on a granite outcrop, some of which are still used for threshing, drying and storing cereals) is close enough to ride to, if you'd like to try geocaching on horseback! It's a 5-6 hour round-trip (4 hours of riding) and a picnic lunch is included. We can take accompanying non-riders by car to the cache site to join in the hunt and the picnic.

We've discovered some lovely places & here are a few: Avô, Gois, Covão de Ametade, Linhares, Fraga da Pena (Arganil) - waterfall/picnic site, Serra de Estrela mountains (esp. Cantaro Gordo), Piodão, and the Dão region.
