Yurt Holidays in Portugal

Our Yurts / Ger

Yurts (also called Ger) originate from the grasslands of inner and central Asia, where they have been home to nomadic peoples since 600BC. Yurts are weatherproof, cosy, comfortable, and durable. These simple circular structures are magical spaces, and upon entering a yurt you will feel instantly calmed and peaceful.

All yurts are not equal! Our yurts are made of quality wood and have at least 3 layers of coverings on the roof and walls: an inner lining, thick felt insulation and waterproof canvas covers, as well as transparent crown covers so you can stargaze from your bed! All the yurts are south-facing and have stunning views across the valley to the mountains. The yurts are cool in summer and cosy in winter (all the yurts have woodstoves). The yurts are simply furnished with some space for your personal belongings, reading lamps (and some reading material) and all bedding/bedlinen is provided.

We have three yurts for you to choose from:

The Mongolian Yurt

The "King of Yurts", bought from Ulaantaij, a sustainable and ethical company who make the highest quality yurts in Mongolia. The yurt is decorated with a beautiful traditional painted design. We chose an orange yurt, which is the colour of joy, wisdom, and creativity - so this is a great space for writers or artists looking for a peaceful retreat. It's also the colour of the sun and is bright and warm in winter - you can't help but feel happy and relaxed in this yurt!

The Mongolian Yurt has a double bed, two single sofa-beds, shelves for your clothes/belongings, a blanket box, chair, & a bookshelf with a good selection of books.

The yurt is situated on it's own at the end of a large terrace, past the swimming pool and above the kitchen caravan. It's in the heart of the "camping area" but remains private. It's shaded by an olive tree with a hammock chair. The yurt has a small wooden deck and an outdoor table and chairs.

Too pretty to sleep!

The Woodland Yurt

We bought this yurt in England, from a forester who was living in it in a woodland whilst working there. This yurt has bentwood roofpoles which give it extra height and the interior has an almost cathedral-like feel to it. We lived in this yurt whilst renovating our house and it's the most "homely" of the three. It's very well insulated and has extra layers of colourful material and rugs lining the interior ceiling and walls.

Double bed, reading lamp, cupboard/drawers for your clothes/belongings, chair, and a low table.

The Woodland Yurt is situated on a high wooden deck in a small pine woodland on a fairly steep hillside. There are steps to access the yurt but we wouldn't recommend it for the very young or old.

Full of rustic charm - and you don't need to worry about banging your head!

The Pixie Yurt

This yurt we bought years ago in England, from a lovely man who'd made it for himself. It's been with us on many adventures - via festivals, France and Spain - before arriving at it's final resting place here on the quinta. It's recently had a revamp (we have a yurt-maker in our village!) with new trellis walls and new covers but still retains it's original crown wheel and hazel roof poles. There's a lovely contrast between the rustic wood and bright cotton lining. It's very cute, a lovely cosy safe space where you can dream away your time.

Inside this yurt you'll find a single bed, a chair, a basket for your clothes/belongings, reading lamp, and a small selection of books and magazines.

The Pixie Yurt is situated on a very private terrace and has its own fire-pit and hammock.

Oh what a perfect spot!

Facilities

We have communal low-impact facilities available for your use (and included in the price of your holiday), for full details see the Low Impact Living page. Facilities include a Kitchen Caravan which is fully equipped to make snacks and basic meals, a Composting Toilet and Solar Shower, and our new 16" above-ground Swimming Pool.

We've stayed in the Mongolian yurt several times. And the woodland yurt. Lovely introduction to yurt living and enough to convince us to have our own 5.8m Mongolian yurt to live in on our quinta. We've now been in one right through a very wet and cold winter. These are lovely spaces to live in and a great way to appreciate how little you really need to be comfortable.
